When the family-run group of companies heristo AG relocated its headquarters to Bad Rothenfelde in 2004, company owner Heinrich W. Risken, inspired by the impressive size of the historic graduation works, had a vision of artistically designing the town centre. With the expert advice of Paul Anczykowski, gallery owner, winner of the German Federal Film Award and participant in the Cannes Film Festival, he devised the outlines of lichtsicht. The projection biennial, unique to the world, was realised as an ambitious major project for the first time in 2007 in collaboration with the municipality of Bad Rothenfelde.
The initiators discovered an ideal experimental ground for the expanding form of light art and moving images in the bizarre shapes and coloured incrustations offered by the mesh of branches. They appointed art historian Professor Dr. Manfred Schneckenburger, Director of Documenta 6 (1977) and 8 (1987) and former Vice Chancellor of the Academy of Fine Arts Münster, to curate lichtsicht 1 – 4.
Since 2015, lichtsicht has been under the artistic direction of media artist and Director of the renowned ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Peter Weibel. He invites internationally acclaimed artists to lichtsicht to illuminate the two graduation works with their latest projections, sounding out the challenging opportunities and constraints of their art on-site.
